Douglas F. (Papa Doug) Manchester
Mr. Manchester is Chairman of Manchester Financial Group, one of San Diego's largest and most profitable private companies. He is a true industrialist with accomplishments on a national and international basis in banking, telecommunications, radio broadcast, medical instrumentation, publishing, and real estate development. He is known internationally for owning and developing two of the largest hotels in the United States. Those hotels are The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. Most recently, Papa Doug was appointed to the California Travel and Tourism Commission by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Additional projects include The Grand Del Mar, the Manchester Business & Research Park, Manchester Executive Center, Manchester Financial Building, and the Whitetail Lodge and Club on Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho.
In 2007, Papa Doug Manchester founded the Manchester Financial Bank. Previously, he was responsible for founding the La Jolla Bank and Trust Company, La Jolla Pacific Savings Bank, and co-founding the San Diego Port Tenants Association, San Diego Crime Commission, NextWave Telecom, and the Broadcast Company of the Americas. He was the founding chair of the San Diego Chapter of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of United Way, a founding member of the San Diego Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization, the Jenna Druck Foundation, The Richard Sabala Foundation, and a Life Director of the Holiday Bowl. Papa Doug Manchester has served on the University of San Diego's Board of Trustees since 1978 and currently serves as a member of the Board of Wake Forest University, The Burnham Institute, NextWave Wireless, Cygnus Multimedia Communications, Junior Seau Foundation, and NexGenix Pharmaceutical. In addition, he is a Director Emeritus of the San Diego International Sports Council, and serves as a member of the Directors Cabinet at San Diego State University, while holding long standing memberships in the World Presidents Organization, Chief Executive Organization, San Diego Yacht Club, La Jolla Country Club, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the Grand Golf Club, among a host of other local and national golf clubs.
He is a devoted benefactor to causes that address the health and well being of children and the community, and together with his wife Betsy, they have endowed scholarships and funded facilities at USD, the Bishop's School, San Diego State University, Wake Forest University, and Cathedral Catholic High School. Most notable are the Bishop's School Library; Manchester Hall and Plaza, and the Manchester Athletic Center at Wake Forest University; the Manchester Conference Center, Manchester Family Child Development Center, Manchester Village and Athletic Fields at the University of San Diego.
Papa Doug Manchester is a major sponsor of the County's Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, and significant contributor to the Preuss School, Monarch School, Polinsky Children's Center, and San Diego Diocesan Ministries. His generosity has extended to the YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Southern California, Scripps Memorial Hospital, USS Midway Museum, and beyond San Diego to the McCall Memorial Hospital and the Manchester Ice and Event Center in Idaho.
Among the many recognitions Doug Manchester has received are the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award, ConVisionary Award from San Diego's Convention & Visitors Bureau, Alonzo Award San Diego Downtown Partnership, American Diabetes Association Father of the Year Award, San Diego Press Club Headliner of the Year Award, the Human Unity Award presented by the San Diego region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Man of the Year by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, also receiving Man of the Year Award from the Young Presidents Organization, Significant Sig Award from Sigma Chi Fraternity, and was a St. Vincent de Paul Society honoree.
Papa Doug married his college sweetheart, Betsy, 43 years ago, and they are blessed with five children and ten grandchildren. His motto is "Making Positive Memories..."
